Autism and the LGBT+ community: Community Discussion
At LGBT Health and Wellbeing, we support a community group for LGBT+ Autistic people in Glasgow and we wanted to grow our understanding of how to best support this group and Autistic LGBT+ community members who use our services.
With that in mind, we hosted a community discussion in September 2018 in partnership with Scottish Autism and our LGBT Autism Group to better understand the needs and experiences of Autistic people. We explored how Autism and LGBT+ identities intersect, its impact and how the LGBT+ community can better support Autistic LGBT+ people.
The community discussion was attended by 28 people in Glasgow. It formed part of an ongoing series of quarterly community discussions that take the format of a panel discussion and allow our community members to engage with questions that are related to their LGBT+ identities and central to their lives.
After short introductions from guest panels at Scottish Autism and our LGBT Autism Group, community members were able to engage in a Q&A. What came out of this discussion is a series of suggestions from Scottish Autism to make our events and services more accessible for Autistic community members.
